The weekend saw all 3 teams in action spread over 3 days! First team started the weekend well winning their 20/20 game with Aman Arora scoring 63 and Leighton Friend 47 forming backbone of formidable 171 off just 20 overs v Thornham. This total proved more than enough.

On Saturday the 1st team had Mangaliso Moshele on international duty, but had the luxury of another international cricketer in their ranks. Simon Kerrigan, who played an Ashes test for England was the stand in professional. Despite his 2 wickets and 22 runs he could not prevent Edgeworth winning comfortably in the league game as 252-5 played 125 all out. It had all looked so promising for Unsworth as Todd Casey (39) & Shaun Kenworthy (35) had put on 65 for 1st wicket, but a dramatic collapse ensued!

The 2nd team did better beating Failsworth Macedonia by 3 wickets. Rob Connor (4-35) was pick of bowlers as opposition posted a respectable 152. In reply captain Tom Earnshaw (50) & Danny Creer (46*) saw the visitors home with a number of overs to spare. Thanks to Pete & Gill Long for ball sponsorship!

The 3rd team fell narrowly short on Sunday to Stand, chasing 173 off 40 overs, they ended up on 160-8. Mason Garnett 2-25 & 25 with bat and veteran Gary Jones who scored 47 were the pick of the home side’s performers. Thanks again to Pete & Gill Long for match ball sponsor, as well as Jean Joynson & Aman Arora the week previous!

The 5th league weekend of the season went much the same way as the other 4, with an Unsworth Senior Team Winning and a team losing! The 2nd team were the odd one out, not to play, with their game at the Den rained off on Saturday. Over at Dunkifield a 26 over game started at 420pm. The home side posted a par score of 140 for 7. Stand in professional Khan and Jack O’Brien were the pick of the bowlers showing great control in the 2nd half of the innings. In reply Unsworth made several changes to their batting order, but soon found themselves 6 wickets down with ess than 30 runs on the board. Mo Saoib was pick of Dragons batting with 29, he helped the team eventually limp to 95 for 9.

On Sunday the 3rd team defeated Friends Sporting Club 2nd 11. They bowled the opposition out in the cup game for just 115, with 7 bowlers used in total. Unsworth eased to victory with 12 overs to spare and with only 3 wickets down. Jack Ryder 46 not out top scored. Thanks to Vic Sleigh for the match ball sponsorship.

Junior training is on this Friday as normal from 615 pm, the 1st team are at home on Saturday to Denton. Sunday is 2nds at home to Walshaw in the cup. And a date for your diary, Sat June 2nd, race night in members bar, watch this space for more details!

Unsworth Senior Teams won 2 of their 3 games over the weekend in the Greater Manchester League, ironically both the home games! Saturday saw the twos defeat Heywood, with home side posting a competitive 154. Liam Brady with 34 with pick of home sides batting although there was contributions all the way down the order, including a valuable 30 or so for last wicket with Chris Sherington and Rob Connor. In reply Heywood limped to 99 all out, Rob Connor 3-31 pick of the bowlers. Thanks to Bob & Sue Judge for the ball sponsor.

The first team lost despite being in the game for long periods. Heywood posted 241 on a very flat wicket at the Crimble. Ian Hall 2-51 and Jack O’Brien 2-56 were the pick of the Unsworth bowlers. Despite an opening partnership of 83 off 12 overs, and being well placed at 115 for 1 Unsworth’s middle order crumbled. Leighton Friend 49 was the top scorer, and looked very dangerous. The team ended up on 204 all out with around 8 overs left.

On Sunday Mark Crowther’s bowling, (yes you read it right bowling), inspired a win for the 3rd team. In trouble at 59 for 6, Mason Garnett 58* and Danny Creer 52* lifted the home side to a formidable 165 for 6 in 39 overs. In reply Newton were always behind in the game, and captain Mark Crowther demolished the lower order with a blistering spell of 5 wickets for just 4 runs. Thanks go to Tom Earnshaw for ball sponsor.

This weekend, saw the first team record their 2nd win of the league season, with an exciting home win against Stand. Stand posted 209, which looked a sizeable total. Jack O Brien (3-42) and Jengy (2-26) were pick of the bowlers. Stand in professional Gous picked up both batsman who passed 50 too! In reply stand in pro Gous (48) put Unsworth in a good position, but a succession of wickets in middle left the team at 130 for 6. Jengy, however batted sensibly and saw the team home with an impressive 41*which included 2 massive sixes! Thanks to Wilton Cad Services, Mike Boothroyd’s company for match ball sponsorship. The 2nd team lost heavily, only posting 116. Adam Earnshaw the only batsman to post above 11, with a well-constructed sensible 40 not out. Denton knocked off the total with 25 overs to spare, for loss of just 2 wickets.

On Sunday the 3rd team played Springhead 2nd team. The opposition posted 240, which proved just too much. Ramsay brothers, Nathan & Jacob scored 57 and 41 respectively with Danny Creer also scoring 49. Despite the best efforts of all, the team finished just 6 runs short. A good effort nonetheless. This weekend sees junior training on Friday from 615 as normal, and 2nd team at home on Saturday, with game starting at 130.

Both the 1st and 2nd team suffered narrow losses to Woodhouses on the 2nd weekend of the GMCL season. At the Den, Unsworth restricted Woodhouses to just over 90 all out. It is the first time the teams had meet at senior level for nearly 30 yrs, Michael Atherton played against us then! Ian Hall was pick of bowlers with 5 wickets, but a number of bowlers were used and all contributed. Unfortunately this proved too much for Unsworth who fell all out about 20 short, disappointingly. Overseas amateur Leighton Friend was the pick of the home side’s batsmen.

Over at Woodhouses the twos posted 164 in their 45 overs, Steve Earnshaw & Adam Earnshaw scoring either side of 50 runs each respectively. Steve batting sensibly for a number of overs, Adam coming in at the end with a series of boundaries in quick succession. A tense game ensued, but the opposition won by 3 wickets with a handful of overs to spare.

Thanks to Dave Joynson for the 1st team ball sponsor. This Saturday sees twos at home to Heywood on Saturday, and third team at home to Nelson on Sunday. Please come down and support the bar will be open, and Sky Sports on the TV. The club will be open on Friday night as usual for junior training from 615 also.
